We are now Powered by Pultz Poppers and Flies

Now, more than ever, we at Palapas Ventana have our fingers on the Pultz of Fly Fishing…

Palapas Ventana fly fishing guests deserve the best.  We are excited to announce our exclusive partnership with legendary, professional fly tyer, Neal Pultz. The fly shop at Palapas Ventana will now feature purpose built, custom designed Pulz saltwater poppers and sardina flies.

Pultz poppers and flies are proven “fish getters”. They’ve been tested and found to be highly effective for all species you might encounter here in Southern Baja. Neal will be producing, custom “up-armored” Baja poppers for explosive topwater fly fishing as well as “Sardina Packs” targeting open water game fish (Dorado, Roosterfish, Tuna and Yellow Tail, Jack Crevalle) and “Reef Packs” for chasing down game the rocky areas around Isla Cerralvo (Pargo, Cabrilla, Pompano).

History of Pultz Poppers and Flies: Neal Pulz, and Pulz Poppers is a highly respected professional fly tyer in the world of striped bass fishing and green bass fishing in Northern California. His hand shaped, painted and coated poppers are works of art. Neal is notable for his attention to detail, innovation and knowledge in the world of both topwater and streamer fly fishing.

Popper Design and Features:

Materials: Pultz Poppers are created from either foam or hand shaped cork. His cork poppers are used for large, small and striped bass fishing. We will be stocking a few of his beautiful cork poppers for fishing into rock cover her on Isla Cerralvo or into the mangroves of Magdalena Bay. For our open water poppers, Neal has improved on the venerable foam crystal popper by increasing the size of the body and by using an epoxy coating over the foam to “up armor” the popper – creating a popper that is durable for many toothy attacks. All poppers are hand painted and feature skirts ranging from flashy to subdued to match the tempo of the bite.

Hook: As an upgrade to the hooks found in many poppers, Neal has increased the strength of the hook (no more bent out hooks) by using Mustad, 3/0 heavy wire hooks. These hooks are not only strong, but they’ve produced an increase in  the “hook gap” between popper body and hook point, producing more solid connections on hook set.

Action: The design of these poppers allows them to create a popping or splashing action when jerked across the water’s surface, attracting the attention of predatory fish. When your sardina fly is getting ignored or refused, tie on a popper and get ready to have your mind blown. Both dorado and roosters explode on these poppers – they are integral part of any Baja fly angler’s quiver.

Sardina Flies and Reef Packs:

Neal will also be producing the “bread and butter” fly for fly angling in Southern Baja: The Sardina Fly. Neal’s flies will be tied on wide gap, Gamakatsu hooks which are strong enough for fighting grande grade roosters and dorado, they are sticky sharp and they are also just heavy enough to produce the correct orientation in the water for the sardina fly (we call this “keeling”). The flies will available in the colors we have found to work the best in our particular waters (you’ll be surprised to see lots of tan and brown over white – these are GREAT color combos for down here). As a veteran striped bass fly angler, Neal knows how to create baitfish flies of correct proportion and shape – his sardina fly offerings will be deadly.

Neal will also produce a limited quantity of the rooster fly known as the Kinky Muddler. If you’ve tied these you understand the difficulty of the pattern. It’s fussy, it’s a messy tie and it must be trimmed and “tuned” to get it to behave just right in the water. When it all comes together you’ve got a proven trophy rooster fly. Neal’s got the combination just right and we’ll be featuring these in our shop on a limited basis as well. Get ‘em when and while you can!

Reef Packs:

Neal’s final offering will be a set of clouser type flies that we call a “reef pack”. If you’re going to take a break from chasing pelagics, and you want to increase your species count going to the rocks is a great way to do it. Fished with a sinking line, Neal’s reef pack flies are, again, proven fish getters. While clouser may bring to mind lead barbels over chartreuse and white bucktail, Neal has again, tailored this classic to our specific needs. The reef packs will feature rugged, smaller flies, tied in the clouser tradition but featuring a flashtail extension. When tied this way we’ve found these flies to be irresistible to cabrilla, pargo and pompano on the reefs. These, will also be available in the Palapas Ventana fly shop.

We’re excited to feature Neal Pulz’s flies here at Palapas Ventana. Please come on by and check out our selection – and as always reach out with any questions you might have: john@palapasventana.com.
