In November, it begins. The Northwest wind is coming back to La Ventana. It’s so close you can taste the salt water. Just two months until ear-to-ear kite grins, high fives over Pacificos and three-session days. We know you have a lot of questions, so let’s get some answers out of the way and get kiting.

Why is everyone talking about La Ventana?

Kiteboarders have discovered a hidden paradise here. La Ventana has it all: consistent thermal winds November to April, affordable (and incredible) food and accommodations, cold Mexican beer and a friendly, stoked community of kiters and windsurfers. Baja California Sur is quintessential Mexico, minus the crowds. And it’s easy to personalize your dream kite-cation: a mellow barbecue with friends watching the sunset, a luxurious day at the spa or a late-night dance party on the beach are all at your fingertips.

What kite gear should I bring?

All of it! You’ll want a weapon for whatever Mother Nature throws your way, but you’ll probably use an 8 to 10m kite most days. Bring your 12m or foil if you can. A few times a year the El Norte swell will bring waves right to the front door of Palapas Ventana, so don’t forget your surfboard.

What’s the weather like?

The weather around La Paz and La Ventana is mild, generally hovering between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit between November and March. January is the coolest month. Mornings start off perfectly calm. The Sea of Cortez is like glass, the perfect backdrop for an early morning SUP session, beach walk or yoga practice. Temps will climb into the mid-70s, though it will feel cooler than that once the wind starts to pick up around 11 a.m. On a classic La Ventana wind day, the wind will blow steady between 15 and 25 knots through the afternoon, dropping off by 6 p.m. As soon as the sun sets, it’s usually time to grab a sweater. It may be Mexico, but we’re in a desert here and evenings cool off into the 60s. A pair of long pants, and a flannel or sweatshirt are must-haves. So are bikinis, board shorts, trucker hats and sunscreen.

When should I visit?

That’s easy. Schedule your in late January. It’s after the holiday rush and you’ll have the chance to be visit one of the world’s premiere kite boarding destinations. Fill your days with SUP races, freestyle practice, top kite and windsurf conditions and epic parties all available right at our resort. During the once-famous La Ventana Classic, these dates were perfect for competition and we raised $25,000 annually for local schools.

Pro-tip!

La Ventana veterans all agree that not all the action happens in town. The La Paz region of Baja California Sur is a wild, rugged Mexican adventure waiting to happen. Trek deep into cardon forests, explore secluded beaches or seek out charming historic towns. Take a day off kiting and check out a cave painting hike or hot springs tour and get a taste of Baja unplugged. If you can’t bear the thought of abandoning good wind, at least you have some solid plans for a – god forbid – low wind day.
