Your Magdalena Bay Gray Whale Experience
Here’s our detailed 4-day excursion to Magdalena Bay
Day 1: Arrival at Magdalena Bay
- Late Morning: Arrive at San Carlos and transfer by boat to the Mag Bay Outpost on Magdalena Bay Island, your rustic yet comfortable lodging for the next few days. Enjoy the beautiful, remote setting on the island.
- Afternoon: After settling in, take a short birdwatching walk around the outpost. You may spot a variety of seabirds such as brown pelicans, ospreys, great blue herons, and frigatebirds. The diverse mangrove ecosystem here attracts many species.
- Evening: Unwind with a fresh seafood dinner prepared by a private chef. Expect locally sourced fish and Mexican-inspired cuisine, accompanied by views of the sunset over the bay. End the evening stargazing by a beach bonfire.
Day 2: Gray Whale Watching & Fossil Hunting
- Morning: Start the day early with your first gray whale-watching boat session. Magdalena Bay is famous for the annual migration of gray whales from December to April, and you’ll get to observe mothers and calves in their natural habitat. Your guide will provide insights into whale behavior and migration patterns.
- Lunch: Return to the outpost for a delicious lunch of ceviche, fresh salads, and homemade tortillas.
- Afternoon: Embark on a guided fossil hunting excursion along the shores of the island. Fossils you may find include ancient marine mollusks, coral, shark teeth, and sometimes whale bones, remnants from when the area was submerged. The island’s unique geological formations make it an excellent place to explore ancient marine life.
- Evening: Relax with a chef-prepared dinner, perhaps featuring grilled shrimp or lobster, and unwind after an active day.
Day 3: More Whale Watching & Exploring Sea Life
- Morning: Head out for your second whale-watching session. This is a prime time to get even closer to these majestic creatures, as they often approach the boats in curious interactions. Keep your camera ready!
- Lunch: Enjoy a light lunch at the outpost, including local vegetables and grilled fish.
- Afternoon: Explore the rich marine ecosystem with an afternoon boat ride, where you’ll likely see sea turtles, dolphins, and various types of rays swimming in the clear waters. You might also come across sea lions lounging on nearby rocks or beaches.
- Evening: Dinner will be served under the stars, highlighting local flavors like Baja-style fish tacos and fresh guacamole, followed by a relaxing night around the fire.
Day 4: Final Whale Session & Departure
- Morning: Conclude your whale-watching adventure with a third and final boat session. By now, you’ll feel a deep connection to these magnificent creatures and the environment.
- Lunch: Savor a farewell lunch before packing up and preparing for departure.
- Afternoon: Return by boat to the mainland. If time allows, you can make a quick stop at the nearby mangroves to look for egrets, kingfishers, and sandpipers.
This excursion offers a perfect balance of adventure, wildlife encounters, and relaxation, with tailored, private meals and the comfort of the Mag Bay Outpost. You’ll leave with unforgettable memories of gray whales, marine life, and the natural beauty of Magdalena Bay.
